Fact #1: The Bakersfield ‘Sound’

Like Motown is to Detroit and the Supremes, Jackson 5, Temptations and Marvin Gaye, the Bakersfield ‘Sound’ is associated with Korn, Merle Haggard, DJ Flash, Riot, Michael Lockwood, Adema and, of course, Bakersfield’s very own Buck Owens.

The musical legacy here is legendary and respected by many. Amy Adams, the winner of American Idol, is famously known to have been born and raised here in our own backyard.

Fact #2: The Earthquake of ’52

In 1952 there was a MASSIVE earthquake that caused major destruction in much of what is the downtown area today. Most of the historic buildings residing there were destroyed as a result.

Fact #3: The Most Productive Oil County

Kern County, where Bakersfield city resides, is home to the most productive oil producing county in the country.

Fact #4: The Theater of the Stars

The Fox Theater located downtown is one of the few historical relics that was preserved after the earthquake of ’52 that hosts some of the most famous bands and artists since 1930; its grand opening.

Fact #5: West is the Best

Sam Lynn Ballpark has the unique distinction of being the only baseball stadium field in the U.S. that faces WEST. This is unusual considering that this set-up is where the sun rise and sets causing the batter to be blinded by the pitch. Maybe it was designed that way to build eye-ball coordination.

Fact #6: The 9th Wonder of the World

Bakersfield is the 9th largest Californian city and the 52nd largest city in all of America. We’re not surprised considering it has 54 parks to accommodate the growing area since many would be families enjoy the conservative approach to child-rearing and the community feel that comes along with it. The old adage “The Whole Village Raises a Child” certainly applies here.

Fact #7: The Butcher of Bakersfield

If you’ve ever seen the movie “Running Man” starring former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, the plot (SPOILER ALERT!) is essentially his character being framed for murdering a large group of people rioting for food in the Bakersfield. It’s a great movie. Check it out.

Accounting for roughly 90 percent of all carrots produced in California is Grimmway and Bolthouse Farms. Not that’s bound to make a whole lot of rabbits happy.

Did you know a whole bunch of people migrated from Texas to move out to Bakersfield way back during the gold rush days for oil and new opportunities? Well that explains the ‘ol’ country southern roots such as the local delicacy – Pickled Tongue. Now, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. In fact, you wouldn’t know it could taste so good if you don’t know beforehand what it is. Everyone who lives here has tried it at least once and no matter where you go its become a local favorite.
